Pakistani Student wins best Scientific Poster Award in Texas, U.S

The Dow University of Health Sciences, is one of the oldest public research university located in the urban metropolitan area of Karachi, Sindh. A student of Allied Medical Sciences at the University Amna Shireen represented Dow University of Health Sciences at 59th Annual Biological Safety Conference organized by American Biological Safety Association(ABSA) at Texas, United States of America. She won the best Scientific Poster Award at the conference.

The Biological Safety Conference was held starting September 30th to October 5th, 2016 at the Gaylord Team Resort, Convention Center, Grapevine, TX. First three days of the six-day conference were dedicated to intensive preconference courses aimed at educating and inspiring the attendees and participants for exchange and use of biosafety information. Among the 28 intensive preconference courses were: Laboratory Design Principles and Practices, Essentials of Health and Safety at the Boundaries of Biosafety, Basic Risk Assessment, Engineering for Bio-Safety Professionals etc.

Three full days were designated to state of the art keynote speakers, papers, and panels highlighting best practices and hands-on skills that are crucial for today’s biosafety and biosecurity professionals. The conference also included exhibits showcasing the latest laboratory biosafety and biosecurity products and services. The event provided the participants with invaluable networking opportunities to share and learn from other biosafety and biosecurity professionals. The conference also included a special event ‘Texas shindig’, held at Glass Cactus Club.

The winning poster presented by Amna Shireen was titled “Training improves biosafety practices among healthcare workers: A Three years personal experience”. The poster received a lot of appreciation from other participants. The winning poster was selected after critical review by the technical committee consisting of a number of judges and experts. A lot of participants showed interest in the improvement of biosafety practices in Pakistan. The poster presented a very positive image showing that international healthcare and biosafety standards are followed during the training of healthcare workers in Pakistan. The winning award was among various categories of National and International Poster Awards.

Amna Shireen received a shield and a certificate at the award ceremony held on the morning of closing day of the conference. The award was highly appreciated by the students and the staff of the University. The founding chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Professor Dr. Masood Hameed Khan appreciated and congratulated her on this huge achievement.
