An air of fear and uncertainty has engulfed the Muslims living in America after the rise in the Islamophobic sentiment. Presidential candidate Donald Trump has further worsened the situation by his derogatory remarks about Muslims and as a consequence, Muslims in America are increasingly becoming the victim of abuse and assault.
Recently a 7-year-old Muslim student in North Carolina was subjected to abuse and violent while beating by the hands of five other children who were riding on the same bus. They made references to Islam, Muslims and Pakistan during the entire incident, clearly indicating their hate.
The child is an American citizen with Pakistani roots, he is a student of Weather stone Elementary School in Cary, North Carolina and was attacked while he was on his way to home from school.
Father of the victim told that his son was badly bullied by the group of boys in the bus and this is not the first time that his children have become victim of religious intolerance. In the past as well his children have been bullied.
His 7-year-old son was badly punched in the stomach and face, his arms were twisted and he was constantly harassed for being a Muslim.
In reaction to an increase in such incidents, Council on American-Islamic relations (CAIR), the largest organization for advocacy of Muslim rights and protection raised serious concerns and demanded a thorough investigation. They also acknowledged the signing of “safe place to learn” legislation in order to protect Muslim and Sikh students who are being targeted because of their religion and ethnicity.
It is unfortunate to note that incidents of bullying based on religious backgrounds has substantially increased over the past few years. A 12-year-old girl was beaten at a school in New York and called ISIS, rocks were thrown into the home of a Muslim family in Plano, Texas and a shopkeeper was beaten by a local who said he will kill all Muslims.
Hate crimes and targeted campaigns against Muslims in America have not only made lives difficult but has created an ambiance of fear. Anybody could be the next target because he is a Muslim. As a result of these incidents Muslims all over are highly ambivalent of their future.
In call to the robust increase in incidents of violence at schools, the government has passed a legislation, Safe place to learn, whereby the law strictly commands that no discrimination is to be done based on ethnic background. The law states,
Existing law states the policy of the State of California to afford all persons in public schools, regardless of their disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other specified characteristic, equal rights and
Despite the initiation of action of the federal and judicial level, these incidents are still not coming to a halt causing grave concerns amongst the Muslim community.
