Punjab Government allotted disputed land to Amir Khan for Boxing Academy

Pakistan origin British boxer Amir Khan vows to prepare Pakistani boxers for the next 2020 Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo. He believes that Pakistan has immense talent in the field of boxing and can be a top nation in it. He recently inaugurated a boxing academy in Islamabad and hopes to establish one in Punjab also.

Talking to the media on Wednesday Amir Khan said that the land Punjab government had promised to give him for establishing a boxing academy in Lahore is “disputed”.

The Chief Minister had promised to give me land for setting up a boxing academy but practically I have been given no land.

The Punjab government spokesman told Dawn news that Chief Minister hasn’t made any promise regarding giving him a land for boxing academy in Lahore, Punjab. The spokesman further said that:

The Punjab government is setting up a boxing academy near Gaddafi Stadium at a cost of Rs100 million. The government of the Punjab requested Khan to coach the young talent there.

While talking to the Express Tribune, Amir Khan’s Spokesperson said that boxer Khan and other related authorities had recently met the Education Minister Rana Mashood. The minister told them that the Punjab government had a dispute with the federal government over the land. But the dispute had been sorted out and the land now belongs to the Punjab government. He further said that we will meet the Punjab Government officials soon and if there is any positive news regarding the academy Mr. Khan will announce it formally.

The “Amir Khan Boxing Academy” (AKBA) has been set up at Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad in association with Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). They signed an agreement according to which Amir Khan would give coaches and boxing equipment, whereas PSB would extend all the required support to run the academy efficiently. Amir aims to open more academies in Pakistan so as to promote and improve boxing culture in the country. He said he would keep on visiting Pakistan, on and off to provide training to the new pugilists.

Super-lightweight champion lost a fight against Canelo Alvarez on 7th May in Las Vegas. Fans were upset because Amir Khan is recently recovering from a hand ligament surgery and will stay out of the ring till 2017.
